Get up and Go

Go with Dan 01

I spent most of the weekend in my sickbed. On Saturday, the whole day was spent languishing and sleeping, waking occasionally to cough, medicate and indulge in self-pity. I’d caught that flu that’s been going around, but by all accounts, I managed to get away with a fairly mild dose of it.

But I had good reason to get up and about today, even though I wasn’t firing on all cylinders…

I finally got to play a game of Go against somebody who knows how to play. I’ve been talking about it with anyone who’ll listen since I first posted about it when I started this blog. My ambition has been simply to sit somewhere nice, and play a leisurely game over a drink.

I finally managed to organise it. Dan, one of the proprietors of Jibbering Records knows the rules. He considers himself a beginner, but he has played before — though not for several years. As a complete newbie myself, it was nice to play against somebody slightly better than me, but not so advanced that I didn’t stand a chance.

Final score: W:93 B:76.

I was black. I lost, but I didn’t disgrace myself.

We played a 13×13 board, rather than the advanced competition 19×19 regulation board. As it was, it took us a couple of hours to come to a successful conclusion. The larger layout (on the other side of my board) would have taken another couple of hours.

But I had a really lovely time doing it. A couple of drinks on a Sunday afternoon at the refurbished Fighting Cocks. Good conversation, a bit of strategic thought and a nice reason to sit still for a couple of hours.

We’re going to play again in a couple of weeks. Then we’ll find out if I was just lucky this time.
